Upper Arm Fit Guide

For our Opera length gloves, we take a measurement for your upper arm fit to ensure the glove has a correct and flattering fit all the way up your arm. To be clear, the measurement we need is the circumference around your arm at the point where the glove ends - either your bicep or just above the elbow depending on the style of glove.

Please take care with this measurement and give it to us accurately. We really want your gloves to look perfect, and not be too loose or too tight. With your help we can get them just right!

How do I measure my Upper Arm?

Measure from where the thumb creasve meets the wrist.

Keeping your arm relaxed, measure up the arm until you reach 16 inches. This is where the glove ends.

Measure the circunference of your arm at this point.

The exact result in inches is your Upper Arm Fit for an Opera Glove. Please round to the nearest 0.25 inches.

To convert centimetres to inches, divide by 2.54 - e.g. 23cm = 9 inches

My measurement is below 8.5 or above 15.5 inches, what should I do?

We will still be able to work to your specification, but please contact us before ordering.

Our glovemaking

The hub of our glovemaking operation is a small, flint walled building that was built some 150 years ago to house dairy cows. All around us are pastures. A mile to the south, the green hills of the South Downs separate us from the salt seas of the English Channel.

It takes a lot to make a good pair of gloves. Great fabrics, selected with great care from mills large and small, skill and people with a passion for making things just right.

Almost everything we make is made to order. So that the person who is making your gloves knows exactly what you want in terms of glove size, style and dimensions.  They will also know your name and you will know theirs because, when they’ve finished your gloves and they’re completely happy with them, they will sign the tag to say so.

Ultraviolet

The cotton for these gloves is Ultraviolet Protection Factor 50+, the highest level of protection against the effects of the Sun's UV rays. Our cotton is effective at blocking both UVA and UVB.

About 5 percent of UV rays are UVB. They have higher energy levels than UVA rays, and typically damage the outermost layers of your skin, causing sunburn. These rays directly damage DNA and are the cause of most skin cancers. The other 95 percent are UVA rays - these can pass through glass (such as a car windshield) and penetrate your skin more deeply, causing your skin cells to age.

Our cotton blocks both UVA and UVB to the highest measured standard (UPF50+), making these gloves effective at providing all round protection against the sun.

Glove Size

We make our gloves in hand sizes from 6 to 8½. To find your glove size, pass a tape measure around the widest part of your hand - usually over your knuckles, excluding the thumb. The result, in inches, is your glove size. If you are between two sizes, round down to the lower.

Here is how you convert from centimetres to inches:
Glove size Inches Centimetres
6 6 15.2
16.5
7 7 17.8
19
8 8 20.3

21.6

How do I guess someone's glove size?

If you are buying gloves for someone and don't know their glove size (and don't want to ruin the surprise), their height can indicate their most likely glove size. Please note, this is statistically most likely but won't be correct 100% of the time.

Applies to women only

Height Most likely glove size
Under 5'1"
5'1" to 5'6" 7
5'7" to 5'8"
5'9" to 5'11" 8
Above 6'
